The Government of Guatemala, the private sector, and civil society all play a role in the USAID Puentes Project for improving the capacities that youth need to respond to emerging market demands. The project’s purpose is to empower youth to take control of their future through information, knowledge, and the development of skills to access opportunities that improve their economic status, while continuing to provide support services that are key to their well-being. The overall goal of Project Puentes is to improve the quality of life for youth aged 15-24 from the Western Highlands of Guatemala by addressing key factors that drive undocumented external migration through improved access to employment, education, and development as well as quality of life issues. Challenges are even greater for young and indigenous women with low educational levels and limited economic opportunities. This has led to high levels of internal and external migration. Their access to social and health services is inadequate compared to youth in other parts of the country, resulting in a lower quality of life. Youth aged 15-24, living in the Western Highlands, experience poverty and violence as well as lack of access to land, and to educational, and economic opportunities. The national youth unemployment rate is five times higher for youth between 15-24 years, than for those over 25 years of age (National Statistics Institute- INE 2014). Puentes Project seeks to improve job skills and abilities, and give access to job or entrepreneurship opportunities, for youth ages 15 to 24. and its partners: Asociación Grupo CEIBA, Asociación Kemow Eta´manik Bilingüe Intercultural (AKEBI), Fundación para el Desarrollo Integral (FUDI), Fundación para el Desarrollo Integral de Programas Socioeconómicos (FUNDAP), Fundasistemas, Juárez y Asociados, Mundo Posible, Red Nacional de Grupos Gestores, Universidad Galileo and Vitruvian Consulting are implementing the USAID Puentes Project in the Western Highlands of Guatemala.
